Exploring the golden ratio for interior design

The golden ratio for interior design

While there are many widespread instances of Pareto's principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, today we are talking about something with a little more balance - the 60/40 rule.

The ratio (which is roughly 60/40) is a practical guideline to achieve a visually balanced room. Start by filling 60 percent of your floor space with furniture and leaving 40 percent open.

Want to dial in the space for the main seating area? Sofas should occupy around 60% of the space, while coffee tables should take up around 40%.

Already have a sofa? Look for a coffee table that is around two thirds its length for a balanced feel.

Want to put stuff on the coffee table? Whatever you choose to place there, don’t have it take up more than 40% of the space to keep it looking neat.

Decorative throws and pillows for the sofa? Leave 60% of the sitting area clear of cushions.

This rule can also be utilized for wall colors, patterns, and art.

California housing and unemployment update

Housing, jobs, and more

Despite the ongoing layoffs across various sectors, the housing market remains robust. This past January saw 82,000 layoffs, marking the second worst January since 2009. Narrowing the focus to California, the unemployment rate has risen consistently over the past 18 months. Despite this, the housing market remains strong here. The resilience can be attributed to an undersupply of homes, outweighing the affordability constraints imposed by higher interest rates.

The scenario we are in is a bit reminiscent of the housing market in the early 80s, which was the least affordable in half a century. Yet, prices continued to rise due to a shortage of supply.

With the stock market reaching an all-time high, I get the sense that some people are divesting a portion of their stock portfolios, taking their profits and moving them into other assets, such as real estate. The week ahead should cast further light on the timing of a rate cut, as we are due to receive several key economic data releases, including an updated CPI/inflation report.

Real estate may not be on most people’s minds today, as many are preparing for the Super Bowl. Some of the salaries for NFL players are truly mind-boggling - setting themselves and their heirs up for multigenerational wealth with only a few years playing in the league. Despite these impressive earnings, the net worth of the average NFL player is dwarfed in comparison to that of many NFL team owners. For instance, the owner of the LA Rams, who won the Super Bowl in 2022, is a billionaire who amassed much of his wealth in real estate. He also married the daughter of Bud Walton, who co-founded a little company you may have heard of - Wal-Mart.
