Dog-Friendly Restaurants in Carmel-by-the-Sea
A curated, current guide to patios and outdoor tables where well-behaved dogs are welcome - across the village, Carmel Valley, Pacific Grove, and nearby peninsula stops.
Written for locals and visitors who treat the dog as part of the household. Policies change; always confirm patio seating when you book.
Why the village still feels built for dogs
Carmel-by-the-Sea has always been unusually welcoming to dogs—sidewalks, courtyards, and a culture that treats a well-mannered pup as a normal dining companion.
What changed in 2025–2026 is the restaurant map itself. A few longtime patio favorites closed. New tables opened. This guide only lists places that still appear open and publicly welcome dogs on outdoor seating as of October 2026. If you’re relocating with a dog, the same habits that make dining easy here—walkable village blocks, yards, and nearby open space—are often what buyers ask about first.
Terry’s Lounge at Cypress Inn
Lincoln St & 7th Ave · Carmel-by-the-Sea
Doris Day’s famously pet-forward inn still sets the bar. Garden patio with heaters and fireplace, a dedicated dog menu (locals still talk about Dino’s Choice), and a lounge culture where dogs are expected—not merely tolerated. Named Best Dog-Friendly Dining in Monterey County Weekly’s 2025 Best of Monterey County.
Hog’s Breath Inn
San Carlos St (btw 5th & 6th) · Carmel-by-the-Sea
Clint Eastwood’s legendary courtyard, renovated and still openly dog-friendly. Official site advertises a dog-friendly heated patio and a special menu for K-9 guests—steak-and-seafood energy with fireplaces year-round.
PortaBella
Ocean Ave (btw Lincoln & Monte Verde) · Carmel-by-the-Sea
Italian cottage dining with a floral courtyard and heated patio seating. Dametra Group’s Happy Dog Menu (grilled chicken, filet for ambitious pups) is still marketed, and staff are used to well-behaved dogs on patio tables. Request a pet-friendly table when you book.
Catch
Ocean Ave (btw Lincoln & Monte Verde) · Carmel-by-the-Sea
Same Dametra family as PortaBella. Official FAQs confirm dogs are welcome and a Happy Dog Menu is on offer. Outdoor / passageway seating is the dog option—confirm which table you’ll get when you reserve.
Grasing’s
NW corner of 6th & Mission · Carmel-by-the-Sea
Steakhouse-leaning fine dining with a Wine Spectator Grand Award wine list. The restaurant’s own site highlights a pet-friendly outdoor patio—one of the more polished village options for a quieter dinner with your dog.
Alvarado Street Brewery & Bistro
Carmel Plaza, Ocean & Mission · Carmel-by-the-Sea
Local brewpub (“the ’stro”) with a heated patio inside Carmel Plaza. Official policy: well-behaved, leashed dogs welcome on the patio only—not indoors. Easy lunch or casual dinner after a village walk.
Flaherty’s Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar
6th Ave (btw Dolores & San Carlos) · Carmel-by-the-Sea
Longtime village seafood spot with outdoor tables that have historically welcomed dogs. Patio availability is weather- and capacity-dependent—call ahead and ask for a dog-friendly table.
Anton & Michel
Court of the Fountains, Mission St (btw Ocean & 7th)
Romantic fine dining in the Court of the Fountains courtyard. The restaurant renovated into 2026; outdoor seating remains, but dog policy should be confirmed by phone when you reserve—do not assume every patio table is available for pets.
Sur
3601 The Barnyard · Carmel
Coastal California dining with a heated outdoor patio. Listed by SPCA Monterey County as pet-friendly on the patio with water bowls—good when you want a slightly less crowded village-adjacent meal.
From Scratch
3626 The Barnyard (Barn C, lower level) · Carmel
Brunch-and-lunch energy with outdoor patio seating and heat lamps. SPCA-listed for patio pets—handy after a morning hike or farmers-market style Barnyard stroll.
Trailside Café & Beer Garden
3 Del Fino Pl · Carmel Valley Village
Unpretentious valley village spot where dogs belong on the outdoor seating—not as an afterthought. Breakfast through dinner makes it an easy post-hike stop when you’re exploring Carmel Valley.
The Valley Kitchen
Carmel Valley Ranch · 1 Old Ranch Rd, Carmel
Resort signature restaurant with expanded patio and poolside seating. OpenTable tags it dog-friendly; as with any resort dining room, ask for patio seating with your dog when you book.
Crema
631 Ocean View Blvd · Pacific Grove
Espresso, brunch, and bites with indoor and outdoor seating and pet-friendly patios overlooking Lovers Point. Strong coffee stop before a shoreline walk with your dog.
Monarch Pub
617 Lighthouse Ave · Pacific Grove
Patio with firepit and heat lamps; SPCA listing notes pet water bowls and a menu for dogs. Easy PG evening after exploring downtown Pacific Grove.
Village etiquette (short version)
Carmel-by-the-Sea is dog-forward, not dog-chaos. A few habits keep patios welcoming for everyone:
- Leash & settle Keep dogs leashed and under your table. Staff notice calm dogs first.
- Ask for the patio Mention your dog when reserving. Many kitchens cap dog tables.
- Water first Most spots offer bowls; still pack a collapsible bowl for summer fog days that turn warm.
- Beach ≠ restaurant Carmel Beach leash rules and restaurant patio rules are separate—check posted beach signs separately.
The best dog towns aren’t the ones with the longest lists—they’re the ones where a quiet dog on a patio still feels normal at dinner time.
Removed from this guide (closed)
These restaurants appeared on older “dog-friendly Carmel” lists—including our previous page—but are no longer operating. Do not plan a meal around them:
- Forge in the Forest — permanently closed February 2025 (lease not renewed).
- La Balena — closed January 2025 (owners relocated to Italy).
- Cantinetta Luca — closed September 2025; Dolores Street space later became Char Steakhouse (confirm any dog policy separately—not assumed here).
Also omitted after re-check: Katy’s Place (official policy: service dogs only) and spots without a clear current outdoor dog policy.
