Pebble Beach Hiking Trails: Del Monte Forest Loops & Map
Pebble Beach hiking trails: the Del Monte Forest loops, coastal walks, and the official map
Pebble Beach is known for golf and 17-Mile Drive, but residents know it for the trails: more than 27 miles of marked hiking and equestrian routes through pines, dunes, and coastline. Here are the main loops and walks as Pebble Beach Resorts describes them, where to find the map, and the rules on the trail.
The short version: Pebble Beach Resorts says the Del Monte Forest has more than 27 miles of marked trails. The three main loops (Blue, 6.4 miles; Red, 8.1 miles; Green, 10.7 miles) all start at the Equestrian Access Area. Shorter favorites include the coastal boardwalk from Spanish Bay along Moss Beach, the S.F.B. Morse Botanical Reserve with its pygmy forest of Gowen cypress, and the short walk from Casa Palmero to Stillwater Cove. The Del Monte Forest Conservancy manages over 700 acres of open space and trails. Dogs must be leashed, and smoking isn’t allowed on marked trails.

Conservancy land
Managed by the Del Monte Forest Conservancy.
Dogs
Monterey County leash laws apply.
Blue, Red, and Green: the main Del Monte Forest loops
Pebble Beach Resorts says all three launch from the Equestrian Access Area. Distances are theirs.
Blue Trail Loop
Follows the upper part of the old Pebble Beach Road Race circuit, skirts fairways at Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hills with about 300 feet of elevation change, and passes the Gingerbread House into Indian Village, a good picnic stop.
Red Trail Loop
Starts in the woods beside the first hole at Spyglass Hill, crosses the dunes, then turns inland back to the Gingerbread House. Watch for brush rabbits, gray fox, scrub jays, and acorn woodpeckers.
Green Trail Loop
A little of everything: pine forest, dunes, and coast, then up to the S.F.B. Morse Botanical Reserve and Poppy Hills, climbing about 650 feet up Huckleberry Hill before returning.
Getting there: Pebble Beach Resorts says to enter through any of the five gates and follow signs to the Equestrian Access area, and to call ahead about restrictions during special events.
Coastal boardwalks and short walks
Easy outings Pebble Beach Resorts recommends, from a few hundred yards to a few miles.
Spanish Bay fire pits to Moss Beach
About 0.35 miles: a short boardwalk from the fire pits at Spanish Bay to the middle of Moss Beach. Turn right toward Asilomar State Beach or left toward Point Joe.
Asilomar State Beach to Seal Rock
About 3.5 miles: a sandy trail through the dunes behind Spanish Bay becomes a boardwalk around Moss Beach, then footpaths past Point Joe, China Rock, and Bird Rock to a quiet beach at Seal Rock beside Fanshell Beach.
Casa Palmero to Stillwater Cove
About 0.3 miles around the third hole of Pebble Beach Golf Links to the Stillwater Cove yacht harbor and a small beach below the fourth and 17th greens. At low tide you can walk below the fifth hole.
Carmel Bay to Spanish Bay
About 6 miles one way, 12 round trip, with forks along the way. Use the map.
Spanish Bay construction
The Links at Spanish Bay is closed for a redesign until April 17, 2027. Paths near the course may be affected; check locally before you go.
Along 17-Mile Drive
Many of the coastal stops are on these walks. See 17-Mile Drive for the route, fee, and hours.
The S.F.B. Morse Botanical Reserve and Huckleberry Hill
The forest’s rarest plants, up the hill from the coast.
Why it’s protected
The Del Monte Forest Conservancy says the reserve was established in 1972 to protect the endangered Gowen cypress and other species found only on the area’s acidic clay-pan soils. It covers about 84 acres in two parcels.
The walk
Pebble Beach Resorts describes a creekside trail starting at Congress Road through coast live oak, Bishop pine, Monterey pine, Monterey cypress, a pygmy forest of Gowen cypress, and creekside redwoods, about 1.8 miles.
Huckleberry Hill
The reserve adjoins the 372-acre Huckleberry Hill Natural Habitat Area, protected under the county’s Del Monte Forest Land Use Plan. Trails and fire roads there rise to about 800 feet.
Indian Village
A 20-acre Conservancy parcel of mature Monterey pine with a park-like clearing and picnic facilities, reached from The Dunes Road or by trail from Stevenson Drive near Spyglass Hill’s seventh green.

The official map
The Del Monte Forest Hiking and Equestrian Trails map, hosted by Pebble Beach Resorts, shows the green, blue, and red loops, connector trails, fire roads, and landmarks. It was last revised in 2017 and is offered for information only, so expect some changes on the ground.
Who keeps them up
The Del Monte Forest Conservancy, a nonprofit, manages over 700 acres of native habitat, trails, and forest and maintains the hiking and equestrian trails on its land.
Dogs on leash
The property owners’ guide says Monterey County leash laws require dogs to be on a leash. Unleashed dogs can harm wildlife or be hit by traffic.
No smoking
Smoking isn’t allowed in the Huckleberry Hill Natural Area and other forested areas and trails as marked.
Horses
Riders can bring their own horses to the trail system; there’s no overnight boarding.
Share the road
Trails cross private roads. The owners’ guide asks drivers to watch for pedestrians and riders crossing.

What the trails mean for homeowners
For many buyers, the forest is the reason to live here.
Open space stays open
Pebble Beach Resorts says 25% of Pebble Beach is permanent open space. Homes that back onto Conservancy land or habitat areas keep a green edge.
Which neighborhoods
Central Pebble Beach, home to Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hills, and the Upper Forest on Huckleberry Hill sit closest to the inland trails. See Central Pebble Beach and Upper Forest.
Trees and fire safety
Living in the forest means tree permits and defensible-space rules. See building or remodeling in Pebble Beach.
