17-Mile Drive: Cost, Hours, Stops & Resident Access
17-Mile Drive: what it costs, when it’s open, the stops, and what it’s like to live along it
17-Mile Drive runs through Pebble Beach, a private gated community in the Del Monte Forest. Visitors pay at the gate, and people who live there drive it every day. Here are the current fee and rules from Pebble Beach Resorts, the official stops, and what buyers should know.
The short version: Admission to 17-Mile Drive is $12.50 per vehicle, refunded with a purchase of $35 or more at any Pebble Beach Resorts restaurant except Pebble Beach Market. Tour buses pay $6 per passenger, and entry is free for overnight guests of The Lodge at Pebble Beach, The Inn at Spanish Bay, and Casa Palmero. The gates are open to the public from sunrise to sunset, and motorcycles are not allowed. A red-dashed line on the road marks the route.

17-Mile Drive by the numbers
All from Pebble Beach Resorts.
Still 17 miles
The route has changed since it opened in 1881, but it is still exactly 17 miles long.
The Lone Cypress
Believed to be at least 250 years old, and the midpoint of the original drive.
Golf
Seven championship courses line the drive, plus the nine-hole Peter Hay course. See Pebble Beach golf courses and tee times.
Monterey cypress
Native to just two places in the world: the headlands at Cypress Point and Point Lobos across Carmel Bay.
Open space
25% of Pebble Beach is permanent open space, with over 25 miles of hiking, walking, and equestrian trails open to the public.
The Lodge
Built in 1919, above the 18th hole of Pebble Beach Golf Links.
What it’s like to live along 17-Mile Drive
Most of the forest is homes, not scenery stops.
Resident access
Residents and their guests come and go through the gates on passes rather than paying the visitor fee. See Is Pebble Beach public? for how access and services work.
Traffic and events
Visitor traffic, and big events like Car Week and the Pro-Am, are part of life on the main route. Homes on quieter interior roads feel very different from those on the drive itself.
Building and remodeling
Homes in the forest go through the Del Monte Forest Architectural Review Board, with extra review for fences and walls between 17-Mile Drive and the ocean. See building or remodeling in Pebble Beach.
Owning costs
Pebble Beach has its own services district and association. See Pebble Beach HOA and PBCSD fees.
